Yes, he might have struggled not being top boy anymore.. but above all Yes, Fabregas is a fantastic footballer who would improve any team, and he would have improved Arsenal without a shadow of a doubt.
Had we not signed Ozil last summer, I'm sure we would have taken him back, but why not have both? why not? Why not keep the opposition guessing?, why not have strength in depth?
I'm sitting here hoping that behind the scenes Wenger and Gazidis are working on bringing in the best players available for the positions we need to strengthen>
Otherwise as Goonerboy says... nothing has chagedAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-22806182.post-70601533151644896492014-06-09T12:12:50.990-04:002014-06-09T12:12:50.990-04:00This was a really well written article. For a chan...This was a really well written article. For a change, a thoughtful, well reasoned discussion of a major transfer. Amen to that.

The real thing boils down to do Arsenal need him and if Wenger signs other top value players, does signing Cesc still mean the same thing as far as signalling that the penny pinching is over?

I agree he is not the player Arsenal need, but neither was Ozil and there is no denying Mesut makes Arsenal a better team. So Fabregas would make Arsenal better.

But.

Mario Mandzukic, Angel DiMaria, Serge Aurier, and Javier Martinez would, as a group, make Arsenal the favorites to win the Premier League. That's the group, or one like it, Arsenal need.

You could choose Luis Gustavo or Maxine Gonalons or either Bender instead of Martinez; you could pick Nathaniel Clyne or Darul Janmaat or (my personal choice) Mathieu Debuchy in place of Aurier, Antoine Griezeman in place of DiMaria (though DiMaria is head and shoulders better) and even sign Loic Remy and Alvaro Morata or Julian Draxler and have a team that would be favorites to win trophies and titles.

What Arsenal need is an infusion of quality and depth. If the financial dynimc has really changed at Arsenal, and perhaps it has, then the club can, as you say, afford to spend big. Conservatism in the transfer market is not necessarily a bad thing.

For example, if Arsenal were to sign DiMaria, selecting Remy over Mandzukic would be financially prudent. Remy is proven in the PL, has pace, and wants to come to Arsenal. Mandzukic is the better player, but prudence is not bad. Similarly, if Arsenal were to bring in DiMaria (or even Griezeman) they might elect to sign Gustavo rather than Martinez, because he'd be significantly cheaper. And signing Debuchy would cost 10-15 million, so if Wenger signed DiMaria or Martinez, signing Aurier or Janmaat for somewhere in the 7 million zone would make financial sense. In other words, one or two big signings and two or three more solid, PL quality low-risk transfers would be good business.

As a fan, I want the whole enchilada. I want Mario, Angel, Javier, and Mathieu. I want a club that isn't contending for the title, I want one picked to win. On the other hand, if I get it wrong, no one will be asking for me to be fired. As someone who respects prudent financial decisions, I could Accept DiMaria or Martinez or Mandzukic plus lower value sidekicks, just so long as that obvious increase in quality occurs.

If these transfers happen, than Arsenal should not sign Cesc because they don't need him. If none of these transfers happen (or ones of similar quality) then not signing Cesc will feel like poor business and as well as penny wise and pound foolish.

Allowing a rival to strengthen when you can clearly block it is stupid, unless you can make yourself better by not preventing it. Sign Cesc or sign DiMaria (or Martinez), I say, or shut up about good business. He gave many good years to Arsenal and never ran the club down. We knew for a couple of years that he wanted a return to his boyhood club and with Arsenal's financial limitations at the time was not goung to win anything here. The most important reason for signing him is his buyback claus is reasonable and if I remember didn't we lose this years title because Ramsay, Wilshire and Ozil were all injured at the same time. Had we had Fabregas the drop off would not have been as drastic.
We need rotation in the highly skilled midfield positions so everybody can stay healthy.
Elite players at a reasonable price are becoming a rare commodity. Please Wenger do not let him go to Chelsea.
Unknownhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17321492638224204398noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-22806182.post-5857068785421265892014-06-08T19:57:14.891-04:002014-06-08T19:57:14.891-04:00Superb article.

That's the way I chose to look at it.
The best predictor of future behaviour is past behaviour. Jenkinson will probably be given the chance to nail down 1st choice. I don't think we'll but anyone this summer that would walk into a theoretical first 11 (that includes a new striker).
Much like you - hope I'm wrong.
