Let's win the league for Eduardo, even if we couldn't win today.

First and foremost, my thoughts, and those of all the Arsenal supporting community are with Eduardo. In all my years of watching football, it's not only the worst injury I've seen an Arsenal player sustain, but one of the worst injuries I've seen any player suffer. This isn’t just a case of hoping that he’ll be back soon, but whether he’ll be back at all. I sincerely hope he is because he’s a great player and person, and doesn’t deserve to have his career ended by some shit-kicker like Martin Taylor. And as you can see above, his tackle was awful and intentional.

For those of you who want to see exactly how bad it is, there is a link here. I warn you, these photos are not for the faint hearted, but unless you see them (and the one above) it may not be possible to fully appreciate quite what a horrific injury this is, and also the clear intent to hurt Eduardo that Martin Taylor had:

Here

Some of you might think Arsene is overreacting in calling for a lifetime ban, but it's easy to see why Arsene is so upset. We’ve been subjected to a plurality of awful challenges this season, as too many teams still think that the way to deal with us is by kicking us. It was, as Arsene points out, only a matter of time before someone was hurt in this way. For McCleish to come out and say ‘he’s not usually this type of player’ is irrelevant; he was that type of player today and he might have ended a fellow professional’s career.

The rest of the game was largely overshadowed by the challenge, and our players barely kept it together for the rest of the first half. It was almost inevitable that Birmingham would score, and they did. Question marks could be asked over Almunia’s goalkeeping, and he was poor overall today.

But the safety of the dressing room obviously did the players the world of good, and they positively exploded in the opening minutes of the second half. Two great goals for Theo, who will have to step up for the rest of the season given the injuries to our forward line.

We should have comfortably finished the game off, and Adebayor and Hleb were particularly guilty of wasting chances. Did Ade see Bendtner in the two on one situation? Perhaps a little bit too greedy.

The price of wasting our mountain of chances was allowing Birmingham to always be within one kick of squaring the match. And, of course, they did. Clichy, who’s an excellent season, made an awful error, again trying to be over clever when a quick hoof of the ball would have sufficed.

Birmingham got a point they didn’t deserve, and Gallas very publicly sulked. While it’s nice to see that level of passion, it shouldn’t have happened in public. Not actions that were very becoming of a captain.

Overall then, a horrible game. Given the undoubted shock that many of the team were suffering, it’s good to get any points from the match, but to dominate the game in that way and not pick up all the points is a bit sickening.

But not as sickening as the challenge on Edu. So, if we needed any further incentive, let’s win the league for Eduardo. I want to see him on the podium in May as a symbol that you can’t kill real football, no matter how hard you kick your opponent.

Excellent column as always. I can't stand what I'm hearing about Wenger's 'myopia' in calling for Taylor's ban, but even worse were the BBC pundits saying that Eduardo brought the tackle on himself for trying to be 'too clever'. Oddly, it was Graham Poll who was the voice of reason on that occasion - it's an awful tackle and an awful injury. I don't even want to see the full picture, that 'just before' shot is enough for my imagination to fill in the blank.

Sad to happen to such an excellent player - especially as he'll now miss Euro 2008, which he did so much to get Croatia to.

A shame that everything overshadowed Walcott's excellent goals, too. That second was pure class, the sort of move we've all known (or suspected) he was capable of. It's interesting to see that when some players were badly affected by the injury (Adebayor in particular, I think), it seemed to only spur Walcott on. Good attitude, that man.

Clichy - I'm not sure it was a penalty, it seemed a good challenge. But he cocked up in letting the ball get away from him in the first place.

We can still win the league. Hopefully this will only galvanise the players.

Just feel so sad tonight, he was really becoming a vital part of the side, and the model pro. Never complained when he was not playing earlier in the year, and really took his chance when he did play. Also played on the left out of position with no complaints. Just pray he plays again, if not for us then for someone, as he is great guy and a true gent. I agree, lets win the league for eddy, he deserves a championship medal more than anyone.

I clearly understand what Arsene is preaching about. This is the second time in two years something like this has happen to an Arsenal player. Remember Abou Diaby about two years ago.

Good article, First and foremost, all our thoughts are with Eduardo, I for one hope and pray that his exquisite talent will not be lost to Arsenal and football for ever. Remember Everton at goodison?

On your second point about the media coverage, I couldn't agree more.I have previously thought that posts ranting about the media bias against Arsenal were from fanatic gooners with a loose grip on reality, but now I'm beginning to wonder... Arsene was quite restrained in the circumstances, and the Gallas protest whilst petulant was harmless apart from the yellow card. The tackle, the penalty decision (and the lack of a decision for Ade seconds earlier) would bring anyone to the boil.

I only hope this galvanises the team to grow in skill and determination to help speed Eduardo's recovery.

CALLING ALL TRUE GUNNERS. Taylor smirking must not be brushed under the carpet by the mainstream media. Email the Sunday newspapers with the following picture of him grinning

http://www.index.hr/images2/Taylorsenasmijesio.jpg

Surely with enough pressure at least one of the papers would print it, instead of just talking about an 'unfortunate accident' caused by someone who is 'not like that.'

Get well Dudu we'll do all we can for you. I know you're a strong character, you've overcome adversity in the past in your career and you can do the same again. In the meantime lets get him a Championship medal and make sure that filth Taylor does NOT get away with it

Speaking of actions not becoming to a football team captain, how about Birmingham's?

To the intelligent individual who called me a twat - learn to reead, please. I was angry at the people saying those things, not supporting them. Please learn to read and comprehend before shooting your mouth off again.

Fucking Birmingham, we sell players cheaply to them, loan our players to them, and what do we get?
One of the nicest and talented players in the squad gets a broken leg that could finish his career two days before his birthday.
Birmingham are such cunts
