Champions' League Draw, and last week of Transfer window preview.

Firstly, a quick congratulations to one of my heroes, Mr Jens Lehmann, who rightly scooped Uefa's goalkeeper of the year award yesterday. We wouldn't have had much of a season without him last season, and I hope he can keep up his high standards for one more year; the prospect of Manny 'safe hands' Almunia coming back is a worrying one.

Jens received his award at the Champions' League draw, where we were matched up with Porto, Cska Moscow and Hamburg. Most people seem to have been rather complacent about this, but, as usual, I'm slightly worried. We should win the group, but its a considerably harder proposition than last year's - even if it couldn't really have been that easy again. I would say we have to take maximum points at home, and only bank on draws away from home. Going to Moscow is always a bleak prospect, and Hamburg and Porto will also be tough to beat at home. Quiet optimism is my view on things therefore.

Hilariously, Chelsea were drawn with Barca again. Maybe they should just have pistols at dawn between Rijkaard and Mourinho. Although, if they did, Mourinho would probably turn round early, shoot Rijkaard in the back, and then claim it was his unique intuition as the 'special one' which allowed him to do it. Or something like that.

Less than a week of the transfer window remains - thank god - so the endless stream of rubbish will soon be at an end. Until January at least. It appears that we're offering Chels a deal that would see them give us £10m and Gallas for Cole - a deal which is more than fair. Indeed, if they did reject this deal, then they have no intention of treating this deal with any respect for us at all. If they refuse to sell us Gallas at a reasonable price, why should we sell them Cole? If both clubs accepted that they had to give an unhappy player to a rival club, and Chels also gave up on their frankly antagonistic approach of merely offering us Gallas for Cole, this situation could be sorted posthaste. Either way, I expect Cole and Gallas to swap clubs, or for no deal to have transpired, by the close of the window.

I could comment on the Reyes situation, but frankly I can't be bothered. Never, ever going to be sold to Atletico for the £8m or whatever they offered, and unless any club comes in and offers somewhere near £15m+ he'll still be an Arsenal player next week. If he sulks all season, and plays rubbish, he could be flogged on the cheap next summer - and we could get Ribery to boot - but nowt will transpire regarding him for the time being. Whoops, that was a comment on the Reyes situation. It seems I can be bothered.

Aside from these deals, nothing else has really appeared on the rada, even if Arsene is supposedly operating 'under it'. I'm not setting my hopes too high that we'll have any new players by next week, and if we do I think it may be Gallas or nothing. And, for me, Gallas and Rosicky, with Diaby and Lauren coming back soon and being the proverbial 'almost a new player', isn't too bad a summer. I think Bendtner will definitely be pushing for the first XI when he returns in January as well. No Gallas, and we may be looking a little thin.

Agree with you.

If Adebayor keeps playing the way he is, he will be on loan at Birmingham whilst Bendenter is playing in the EPL and CL.

I agree with you on Reyes, but was just wondering why doesn't Gallas buy himself out of his contract and then we give him a signing on fee, and then sell Cashley for 20mill.

If we do that, we get one over on Chel£ea and we also are 17-18 million quid richer because of Cole's sale. The reported deal at the moment means that we are basically losing 8 million to a club that don't need it.

Who reckons that we'll get Faubret or whatever he's called from bordeaux.

I don't really know if there is as much bad blood as what the papers say that there is between Chelsea and Arsenal. Again, with public statements, it appears that it is just another front of PR or another battle....Either way, it creates a great rivalry that we should look forward to...

I half think that Wenger will sell Reyes and buy no one and play Walcott which wouldn't be the worst idea. If he were to buy Ribery, which I would, then you have 4 wingers with massive potential and one with bags of experience (Ljungberg), who is going to play? I suppose that there will be injuries (most notably to Ljungberg), but still not everyone will be injured at once.....

Rumour has it that Javier Mascherano's agent was in North London on Wednesday for the CL match as a guest of the club. Now that WOULD be a fantastic signing. I'm still confident AW has a few deals lined up but he will never pay over the odds for anyone.

Where did you hear that rumour, ukwarrior?

Adebayor really gets too much stick. He's at least a second option in attack is TH10 & RVP are floundering. Though, he was at fault for the goal at villa. I don't know why we don't go for Gravesen. We need that steel and cover.

Arsenal are being reasonable about this and are willing to let cole join chelsea but chelsea are doing everything in their power to stop Gallas joining us in return despite it being the obvious move. the money is not the issue, its the player moving to Arsenal that is the issue with chelsea.

so they want to buy cole really late in august and not sell us Gallas. they will either let Gallas go to Italy or make him stay at chelsea (in reserves in necessary to keep him away from Arsenal). We cant let that happen. thats why we must do the Gallas deal first and if no deal for Gallas then no deal for Ashley. both players stay at clubs they are unhappy at. basically its chelsea trying to control everyone that is f*cking it all up.

as someone said, if Gallas just buys himself out of the contract (and Arsenal refund Gallas his money) then its all sorted, but that is not happening. Does Gallas even want to join Arsenal? If not, just take on illiasu and trust Djourou etc to do a job there this season. I dont think centre back is a problem position like left back or central midfield.

Who would AW buy with £20m in his pocket if its not going to be Gallas? He seems sure he is going to get someone. less than 1 week to go now 'til we know everything.

I think AW has someone (not Gallas) lined up secretly, that he is ready to do the deal with the instant that the Ashley Cole deal goes through. both deals will go through on 31st Aug. If this does happen, it would prove that Arsenal DONT have the money for new players splashing around in a bank account somewhere and we literally need the Ashley Cole money to pay for it, otherwise we'd just buy that player now.

What are you talking about gazzap? If Wenger waits until he sells Ashley Cole to buy a replacement, it's not because he needs the money first, it's because we need a replacement for him!! Why buy another left back if Cole ends up staying?

And the reason why we won't go for Gravesen is, guess what? He's crap!

I think the thing we can all agree on is that Chelsea are trying to fuck us over and leave us with minimum cash as late as possible. You wait and see, they will dilly-dally until the last day and then, BOOM, they will offer us just short of the asking price as a "take it or else leave it and keep an unhappy player". We will be forced to sell, they'll keep Gallas or sell him to Milan as they know his worth and they don't want him to go to a rival and we'll be left with our dicks in our hands and a £17m cheque and nobody or no time to spend it on. I really hate that bunch of "siberian schysters", they want their cake and to eat it and there's nothing they'd rather do than fuck over a rival.

I have to say also that if we go into the Champions League group phase with the side that played Zagreb, we will not qualify from the groups, even if Henry and Gilberto start. We are so short defensively that I don't know whether to laugh or to cry. And amid all this talk of Cole/Gallas, has anyone paused to think what our central midfield pairing will look like if Cesc were to get injured and Gilberto suspended for instance? Song and Flamini? Those two should be 5th and 6th choice centre-mids at best at a club like Arsenal.

I think we need some new signings the way we are playing now. Just read Wenger saying that Adebayor is intimidated playing at home now etc etc. I dont think we are strong enough upfront and with Reyes leaving we need to bring a goalscorer. Why dont we swap Reyes for Maxi Rodriguez. Defensively no one seems to know thier job. Henry and Gilberto are irreplacable at the moment

Do any of you boys think that Wenger's seriously after Mascherano? It's so exciting that I can't see it happening. Arsenal buying big on a defensive player? Mon Dieu!
